Get Licensed

Anyone can earn an amateur radio license. There's no age limit, and you don't need to know Morse code. Most people start with the Technician license, which opens up local radio contacts, repeaters, and some long-distance (HF) privileges. Later you can upgrade to General and then Amateur Extra.

1. Study.

The Technician exam is 35 multiple-choice questions, and every question comes from a public question pool, so you can practice the real questions.

2. Get an FCC Registration Number (FRN).

You'll need one before your exam. It's free from the FCC's CORES system.

3. Take the exam.

Volunteer Examiner teams hold exam sessions throughout the area, in person and sometimes online. Find one near you with the ARRL Exam Session Finder. There's a small exam fee, and the FCC charges an application fee after you pass.

4. Get on the air.

Your call sign appears in the FCC's database, usually within a few days.

We can help. MAARC doesn't hold classes right now, but our members are glad to help you study and to answer your questions. Come to any meeting (see the Next Meeting box) or email wb9hxg@gmail.com.

Once you're licensed: say hello on our repeaters, check in to the area nets, and join the club.
